Walkabout is a Deet free insect repellent Walkabout< was field tested in Mangrove Forest on Cape York Peninsula in Northern Queensland, Australia, and on ethno botanical expeditions along the Amazon in North Eastern Peru and the rainforest in Malaysia. The product provided excellent protection against mosquitoes, sand flies, and terrestrial leeches.
This product was also field tested against mosquitoes by the department of environmental biology at the University of Guelph in Guelph, Ontario, Canada, and the average percent repellency against mosquito bites over a one-hour evaluation period was found to be greater than 96%.
In 1995 the Australian consumers Association’s “Choice Magazine” tested the safety and Mosquito repellency efficacy of 25 personal insect repellents available to consumers in Australia and identified Walkabout as the best “natural” product choice. Essential oils such as tea tree oil (Melaleuca alternifolia), lemon-scented tea tree oil (Leptospermum petersonii), and the essential oil fraction citronellal have been selected as the repellency actives in this product to provide an essentially adverse-reaction-free, effective and safe alternative to the potentially harmful (by skin absorption) insect repellents based on N-diethyl-meta-toluamide ( DEET) and similar to protect the public against the discomfort of insect bites and to reduce the risk of infection transmitted diseases.
Tea tree oil, lemon-scented tee tree oil, and citronella have been used for a long time as food flavors, in perfumes and in toiletries and are of very low mammalian toxicity. The carrier phase in Walkabout has a typical underarm deodorant make-up and also ahs a very low toxicity profile.
